CROSS-CULTURAL WORKSHOPS
Some
of the students with Emmanuel and an American Drummer based in Kwazulu
Natal
On 4 September 1999, the Institute hosted a workshop on “Cross-
cultural similarities – An experience of Unity in Diversity”,
with the world-reknowned Emmanuel Gommado ofThe Odehe Dance Company from
Ghana. We focused on the similarities and differences in Indian, East
African, and South African folkdances, as well as their symbolism and
meanings. A good time was had by all, as well as having many revelations
in the kinship our styles share, come to the fore in a practical and fun
way. It was a micro example of what can be achieved in our country on
a macro –level, with the assistance of arts and culture.
The Institute
also hosted Laveen Naidu, Harlem Dance Company, New York to host a workshop
on Ballet, as well as sharing his ideas on cross-cultural dance as his
roots are also in the South Indian Classical Dance of Bharata Natyam.
He will be doing follow up workshops in July 2004.
