STuDENT

We have had many students pass through our doors over the years.  Some of them are :

VASUGI

Vasugi Singh(nee Devar) at the time, was part of the 1st batch of students 50 years ago along with a few of her sisters.   Going on to further her Bharata Natyam studies in India, she returned to Durban to teach and perform.  Vasugi has obtained her Masters in Education tracing the Origins of Bharata Natyam in SA from UDW.   Although, she no longer teaches or performs at present, she remains closely associated with Community Organistions and the Dance Community in SA.

RENUSHARenusha Manilall is yet another the first-   the 1st South African to receive a scholarship from the Indian Consul For Cultural relations for Kathak.
She started with us at Sastri college at the tender age of 5, and continued her basic and advanced training in Kathak with ADI for the next 13 years.  A stunning performer and consummate artist she obtained her degree in Dance choreography from the Bangalore University and went on to Instruct at prestigious Dance companies in Bangalore such as Lourde Vijays Salsa Studio.
She starred and assisted Choreography SANDIP SOPARRKAR in the Jackie Chan Movie “the Myth” with Mallika Sherawat.   At 21 she was diagnosed with Lymphoma, a cancer which she learned to deal with and fight with same grace  as when she danced.   She passed away last June at the age of 27, still determined to survive!! Her mum Renuka Singh, a single parent made everything possible  for Renusha to fulfil her every desire.  She accompanied the ADI on their Tour of Mauritius in 1995, and has been a pillar of support behind the scenes- it is no different with this tour.  If Renusha was the heart of a dancer – then Renuka is the soul.

SURANA

·

Surana Sarjoo was in the same group as Renusha and they performed beautifully together.  Surana was one of the Institute’s youngest enrolments, and grew with grace and beauty- she was born to dance!  Her grace and warm personality is palpable in all that she does. She has participated in most of ADI’s major Durban Events and the 1995 tour of Mauritius.

Nitasha Ramnath is an incredible human being, and an equally brilliant student and dancer.  She performed for Queen Elizabeth II; Pepsi Cola concerts, and several other prestigious events.  She continues to make her mark in the world as she grew up to be a Medical Doctor and is currently studying toward her MBA.
A high achiever all-round, she excels at everything she does- and was no different as our student.

nitasha

rivashnee
Rivashnee Haripersadh, can be described as a consummate artist, and we are proud to announce that she has continued with her performances both locally and internationally.  She has a deep and abiding love and respect for the artform of Dance.  She is also a Pharmacist by profession.

                                                                                                                                  manisha

Manisha Pillay has always been as cute as a button – it is no wonder that she was crowned 2nd princess at Miss South Africa 2008.  Always articulate as sharp as a razor- she exudes the humility and confidence that is synonymous with the deeply cultural Badal family that she hails from. She is currently studying towards obtaining  her Masters Degree in Science with the University of Johannesburg.

.

princessThandiwe Princess Mzobe became ADI’s first non-Indian pro-bono student after expressing an interest in the Artform in 1992.  She studied Kathak, a North Indian Classical Dance style and folk dance, for 8 years since she was six years old.  She was taken- all expenses paid on both of the Institute’s International tours, and profiled in the “True Love” Magazine in 2000, as a young achiever.  Her parents could otherwise not afford this kind of experience for their daughter.  Rani and Anusia, together with the staff of Cato Manor Technical College, and later the institute were constantly involved in fundraising efforts to ensure Princess’ success.  Later, a few of her friends, as well as, her brother Leon joined the Institute

nerisha Nerisha Maharaj  holds a B Compt degree; SAIPA and SAICA complete.  She has completed her articles and is a qualified CPA ( Charetered Professional Accountant).  Currently busy with Honours CTA B Compt.  She also  serves as the Institute’s Accountant.  Amongst some of her performances were the Telkom Charity Cup at FNB Stadium and TATA “Cliffrider” launch at NASREC, Gauteng.  She is deeply passionate about all things cultural and goes on record as stating that :

I simply love kathak; the classes were fantastic; I learnt and met so many people; kept me in touch with my heritage- each person has to experience that!” “We experienced “True” kathak and also intergrated it with different cultures- its simply wonderful!  I am proud to be part of Indian cultural history and the oldest Indian - based dance Institute in the country, and also that I have a great teacher, who brings out the best in each one of us!”
